So why add Selenium to potatoes?

Australia, like some other regions of the world, has a lower level of natural Selenium in most of its soils. This means that people may not be consuming their recommended dietary intake of Selenium in their diet. Also some farming practices can diminish Selenium uptake from the soil into plant foods.

In the Selena potato, Selenium is present in an organic form which, when consumed, is readily utilized and is more beneficial to the human body than when consumed as the inorganic mineral form, such as via a tablet or supplement. As potatoes are one of the Australia’s favourite vegetables, it is a good way for families to consume more Selenium, as nature intended.

Is the SELENA Potato different in any other way?

No. The SELENA potato looks, cooks and tastes the same as any other potato.

How does Selenium get into the potato?

The SELENA potato is grown in the same manner as all other potatoes. The only difference is that the potato plant has been enriched with Selenium which is naturally utilises.

The SELENA potato is NOT Genetically Modified.

Is Selenium found in any other foods?

Yes. Selenium is found in vegetables, grains, meats, seafood and nuts. The amount present does depend on where and how they are produced.

There is however, a shortage of information with regards to the Selenium content of common foods in the current Australian diet.

What is the recommended dietary intake for selenium?

At present, the recommended dietary intake (RDI) of selenium for Australians is 70 micrograms for adults and 25 micrograms for children.

How much Selenium will I consume from Selena potatoes?

The Selena potato provides an average of 7 micrograms of Selenium per 100 grams in organic form, which means a normal serving of 250 grams would provide approximately 25% of the RDI for adults.

As this potato is naturally grown, environmental factors will change selenium levels in the potato. Your RDI will also vary depending upon the chosen cooking method.
